How Many Pool Lights Do You Need?

In addition to the number of lights, consider the Kelvin rating of the light. The higher the rating, the cooler the light. Incandescent lights are considered warm lights, while LEDs emit a cooler, bluish color.

Place the lights strategically to avoid dark spots. Most pool lights should be submerged a minimum of 18″ underwater and face away from the house or sitting areas. Here are some general recommendations:

For a 15 x 30 pool, one light placed at the deep end in a narrow beam may be sufficient.
A 20 x 40 pool could benefit from two lights.
A 20 x 42 pool may require three lights, placed 5 feet from each end of the pool and evenly spaced between.
It’s important to note that these recommendations are not definitive and should be adjusted based on the type of finish on the pool.
